The Power Of Empathetic Communication
We've all heard the saying, "Don't let your emotions get the better of you!" which is, of course, much easier said than done.
The fact is, our emotions will effect our communication from time to time and as a result we may become short, bossy, aggressive or perhaps even withdrawn and quiet. Being empathetic to the emotional human state gives you the ability to discern when the emotions of others are likely to cause issues with their communication.
Empathy and emotional awareness go hand in hand. You can often identify the emotional state of an individual by looking at how they hold themselves.
A happy person will hold their head up and shoulders back, make eye contact and smile. They might respond to you more elaborately and conversational. A sad or stressed person will often walk with their shoulders hunched and only make eye contact when necessary. They might be short in their responses and not interested in small talk.
Learning to read emotional cues will make you a far more effective communicator.
Adjust your message and delivery accordingly, put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself:
"If I was them, how would I like to be spoken to right now? What would I need?"
It might even be worth pulling them aside for a coffee and asking them how they are feeling.
Enjoy the rest of your week!
