Managing Your Time

Until you value yourself you will not value your time.Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it.
— M. Scott Peck (1936-2005)

In these interesting times we find ourselves in, time management is more important than ever before.

Good time management leads to improved efficiency and productivity, less stress, and more success in life.

There are two main ways to organise your time…

The first is 'list writing' where you write a list of things which need to be done, systematically work through them and check them off as completed. This is a traditional form of time management and works best for the logical mind.

Recently a friend told me about her idea of business sized cards where I write my "to do" items on each card - then, when task completed I can throw the card away. I have found that I am really enjoying this process over the list, especially when I can reshuffle the order of importance each day. ( Saves me spending time rewriting my lists!)

The second way is through mind mapping, which is mostly taught as a planning exercise. It works brilliantly for some people to assist them in managing day to day tasks. Simply ‘brainstorm’ all of the things you need to do that day. As with a list, once things are completed, you can 'check them off' by coloring in each section, to give you satisfaction around your achievements and maintain motivation.

Visually preferenced communicators may even prefer to allocate colors to specific tasks. The use of color stimulates the creative part of the brain as well as memory, so it assists you in recalling things that need to be completed urgently. This form of time management tends to work better for the more creative mind.

If you are someone who finds you get to the end of the day and haven’t completed your 'list', you may like to experiment with the cards or mind-mapping as a way to manage yourself, your life and your team more efficiently.
