Rochester Football and Netball Club members was treated to a talk by Life Performance speaker Carol Fox.
Ms Fox was one of Australia’s first female lifeguards, a state level swimmer and water polo player.
As part of the club’s mentoring program she spoke to the team about the power of communication and staying positive.
Ms Fox said self-talk had a huge impact on athletes and wanted to show the club members that negative thoughts could be transformed into positive ones.
Rochester Football Club president Max Hann enjoyed the example she gave of three swimmers lining up for a race:
‘‘Two of the swimmers on either side could be nervous and the one in the middle could pick up on that nervous energy,’’ he said.
Rochester Netball Club secretary and under 17s coach Louise Williams said the talk taught players that people were different and gave coaches an insight into communicating better with different personalities.
Mrs Williams said the altering of negative thoughts could change player’s attitudes on the court and help them play better netball.
